Sichuan (Shisen-Sho) rules: how tile connections work

Sichuan is a pair-matching puzzle where you remove two identical tiles by connecting them. Matching pictures are only part of the rule: the path between them must also be clear. Understanding the path helps you find a useful next move instead of tapping pairs at random.
In Play Sichuan, you can practice solo at different difficulty levels, then try a 2-minute Time Attack or a battle with friends. This guide explains the connection rules for a basic board.
Identical pictures, a clear path, and no more than two turns
Both tiles must have the same picture. A horizontal and vertical path must connect them without passing through another tile. The path can turn at most twice, giving it up to three straight segments. Diagonal connections do not count.
Adjacent matching tiles connect with a straight line. Empty spaces also allow a one-turn L-shaped path or a two-turn U-shaped or Z-shaped path. Tap one tile, then its matching partner to remove a valid pair.
In the example below, look for the two watering cans stacked near the top. They have the same picture and no tile between them, so they can connect immediately.

A connection can go around the outside of the board
The empty space around the board can be part of a connection. Even distant tiles can match if each has a clear route to the edge and the complete path turns no more than twice.
If identical tiles will not match, check for a tile blocking the route, a tile occupying a corner, or a route that would need three or more turns. Clearing another pair can open a path that was previously blocked.
Start with an easy board and watch the paths open
For your first games, focus on how removing a pair opens new routes. Find adjacent pairs, clear them, and inspect the space they leave behind before chasing a score or playing faster.
Choose Easy in the difficulty selection to practice on a smaller board. Versions with a difficulty and stage selection screen offer Free Play for a random board. If your home screen shows Start Game, use that button to choose the difficulty.
- Look for identical tiles next to each other.
- Remove a pair, then look for a new path through the cleared spaces.
- Check whether edge tiles can connect around the outside of the board.
- Look ahead to the next pair when you are ready to practice quick matches and combos.
When you get stuck: Hint, Shuffle, and Magic wand
Hint helps you find a pair and path that can connect now. Study why the highlighted route works, then match the tiles yourself. Shuffle rearranges the remaining tiles, so inspect the new board instead of relying on their old positions.
Magic wand removes a tile you select together with a tile that has the same picture. It can help clear a tile that is hard to reach with a normal connection. Items depend on your inventory and per-game usage limits, so check whether the item button is available.

Why will two identical tiles not match?
They need a clear horizontal and vertical path that turns at most twice and does not pass through other tiles. If a tile blocks the route or a corner, try clearing another pair to open a path.
Can a Sichuan connection turn three times?
Play Sichuan's basic rule allows at most two turns. That means up to three straight segments. Three segments and three turns are different counts.
Can the connecting line leave the board?
Yes. A path can use the empty space around the board. Each tile must have a clear route to that space, and the complete connection must still turn no more than twice.
